Camilla’s Haircare Favourites: Shampoos and Conditioners

Monica

Have you ever worked out how much time you’ve spent blow-drying your hair? No? Oh, I did, and guess what? It’s approximately 70 days…so far. 70 full days of my life spent sweating under a blazing hair dryer. Isn’t that staggering? You might be inclined to say “What a waste of time”, but if you saw the state of my natural hair you’d quickly change your tune – I assure you, it has been time well spent! Greasy roots, dry, split ends, poodle curls underneath and a gentle wave on top…why me?! I have spent countless hours and untold amounts…

Little Black Book of Beauty: Mooi Hair & Beauty Salon

Mooi Hair & Beauty Salon

Mooi Hair & Beauty Salon is a beautiful, vintage-style pamper parlour in Tamboerskloof, Cape Town, run by the lovely sisters Karen and Andret. Karen and her team are responsible for the beauty treatments while Andret runs a crew of talented hair stylists and personally keeps my locks in tip top condition with a regular cut and colour. I have been visiting Mooi for a few years now, ever since I saw the salon mentioned on Kim Gray’s blog. I’ve had a number of treatments there but most often I go for my monthly eyelash and eyebrow tinting. I have had…

Summer Essentials 2013

Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado: I used to suffer from a dehydrated under-eye area without really knowing it, and found that concealer always looked cakey on that part of my skin. I tried this stuff a couple of months ago and haven’t looked back. The formula is packed with avocado oil and shea butter, and goes on creamy and feels firming without being greasy. The best part is that concealer now goes on smoothly and evenly – result! Price: R280 (14ml) E45 Endless Moisture Daily Care: I generally can’t deal with heavy, creamy body lotions and it’s a non-negotiable especially…

Shimansky Rocks

The Shimansky showroom at the Clocktower in the V&A Waterfront

Last night we were kindly invited to spend the evening at Shimansky‘s showroom in the V&A Waterfront, to get pampered while sipping champagne and draping ourselves in enormous diamonds. It was a tough gig, I have to admit. First up we were given a tour of the Cape Town Diamond Museum, which is adjacent to the showroom, and saw some mouthwatering replicas of the world’s largest diamonds, including The Hope Diamond (which I have seen in real life at the Smithsonian Museum and it would blow your mind), The Taylor Burton, The Star of Africa and the 3,106 carat rough…

NEWS: No More Animal Testing In The EU

No more animal testing in the EU

This is arguably the best news I’ve heard all year! The European Union has, after almost 20 years of tireless campaigning from animal rights groups, confirmed that it will be banning the import and sale of animal-tested cosmetic products (including ingredients) for member states from March 11 2013. This means that from this date onwards, anyone selling new cosmetic products and ingredients in the EU will not be allowed to test them on animals anywhere in the world. This ban does not just affect luxury products either, it applies to everything from skin creams to toothpaste. This is a very…

Shopping Guide: 36Boutiques

36Boutiques Beauty

36Boutiques is an online shopping destination for fashion lovers that has been around for a couple of years. They stock a range of local and international labels, and while they specialise in clothing, shoes and accessories, they also have an amazing range of beauty products – many of them French pharmacy brands. The site is packed with cult beauty favourites (see below) and make-up must-haves from the likes of Bourjois, Stila and Essie. Towards the end of last week, I saw a couple of tweets saying that they had re-launched their site with a new design, so I promptly alerted…

Favourite Five: Lush hair products

Seanik solid shampoo

By now you’ve probably all heard that Lush have opened a store in the V&A Waterfront, much to the delight of the brand’s South African fans. I used to avoid Lush when I lived in London as I always found the smell of the store really overwhelming, and I’ve heard this from a lot of other people too. The strong scents and bright colours of the products also give the impression that everything is full of nasty chemicals and synthetic ingredients. The truth is that not only are Lush’s products ALL NATURAL (and organic where possible) but they’re handmade with…
