What’s the big deal with Hydroxy Acids?

Diane Kruger by Patrick Demarchelier 1994

The past few years have seen quite a turnaround when it comes to facial exfoliation, as physical scrubs have completely fallen out of favour and been replaced by exfoliating acids. Physical scrubs are not only far too rough, leaving behind “microtears” in the skin’s surface, but the tiny plastic beads used in some products are very environmentally damaging as they wash into the sea and don’t dissolve. Chemical exfoliators, on the other hand, gently break down dead skin cells to reveal newer, softer, more even-toned skin. Within this category are two types of exfoliators: Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) AHAs work…

Products I Regret Buying

A number of you have requested this post, and we do see merit in warning our readers about products that we deem utter rubbish. It’s not often that I’m left disappointed by products because I do a fair amount of research prior to purchasing, but sadly these ones slipped through the net: Vita Liberata Ultra Sheer Tinted Gradual Mousse in ‘Light’ Towards the end of last year the usual ‘it’s suddenly summer and I’m so pale’ panic convinced me to dip my toe back in the self tanning pool. I did a lot of research beforehand and decided on Vita Liberata because…

Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne | All Dolled Up

Lush Jersey Bounce Shampoo I’m a devoted and longtime fan of Big shampoo for its ability to give my fine, thin hair lots of texture and volume. Jersey Bounce, the new kid on the block, is very similar in formulation; both contain plenty of coarse sea salt but the other ingredients differ slightly. While Big uses citrus oils, seaweed and coconut oil, Jersey Bounce is packed with honey, eggs (!), glycerine and olive oil to give the hair a little more nourishment. There’s no question that both are quite stripping (avoid if you have coarse or dry hair) but JB gives back…

Camilla and Jules outside SpaceNK | All Dolled Up

This is a long overdue post, seeing as we went to London almost 2 months ago now! We filmed a video when we got home, but the microphone short-circuited, which resulted in a delightful high-pitched buzzing sound throughout…not ideal. Anyway, we thought perhaps it would be best to show you our respective top 5 purchases (to go through everything would take an age) sooner rather than later as we won’t have an opportunity to film together for the next few weeks. So here we go: Camilla’s Top 5 RMK Cheek Brush Without a doubt, my number one purchase. RMK is…

Camilla’s Most Used Holiday Products

You’ve seen Jules’ holiday favourites, and now it’s time to see which products Camilla reached for most frequently over the festive season… Bumble & bumble Don’t Blow It (H)Air Styler This is definitely my number one hero holiday product. It’s a creme which ‘enhances texture and body with a soft, product-free feel for your perfect air-dried style’ – perfect for those days when you really can’t face heat styling your hair (which, given the current Cape Town temperatures, is every day). Prior to using this product, I think Jules, my oldest friend, could count on one hand the number of…

Summer Holiday Favourites

Summer Holiday Favourites | All Dolled Up

The Christmas holidays have come and gone *sob* and since we didn’t get around to doing November or December favourites posts, I thought I would tell you which products I have enjoyed using most in the past couple of months. My beauty routine was generally made up of two extremes: loads of hair and makeup or none whatsoever, so this list is a mixture of good skincare and seriously beautiful makeup: Bioderma Photoderm MAX Aquafluid SPF 50+* My skin tends to be oily on the T-zone, especially in summer, so SPF is my mortal enemy because it invariably makes my…
