America Haul Part One: The Make-Up

I’m back, beauties! And whilst I thought I’d done a lot of shopping, when I unpacked everything to blog about it, it turns out I didn’t do nearly as much as I thought I did. Which begs the question…where did all my money go?! I have split my America haul into two parts: make-up first, and everything else second, and what I thought I would do is give you a rundown of everything I bought, together with a brief “first impressions”-type review on all of them. Let’s get started, shall we?

January Favourites: Camilla

Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation Jules and I were given a bottle of this a couple of months ago and I must be honest, I didn’t touch it until the beginning of this year because my love affair with Dior Diorskin Nude BB Cream was still going strong. However, I am kicking myself for not using it sooner because it is gorgeous! Although the formulation is lightweight, the coverage is excellent and it evens out my skin tone beautifully. The finish is luminous and glowy (my personal favourite, as you will no doubt be aware of by now) and it…

Review: Estée Lauder Double Wear Light Stay-In-Place Makeup

A few weeks ago I popped into Edgars and picked up a sample of the Estée Lauder Double Wear Light Stay-In-Place Make Up, as I had been wanting to try it for a while. As I’ve mentioned previously, you can visit any Estée Lauder counter and they will happily give you a sample of any foundation which should last you up to seven days (why don’t more brands do this?). I have played around with this foundation a lot recently, and I must confess, I am seriously impressed.

Estée Lauder 7 Day Free Foundation Trial

Estee Lauder

Did you know that you can visit any Estée Lauder counter and they will give you a free foundation sample that will last you for up to seven days? I only found that out this week (tut tut)! I have been wanting to try Double Wear Light Stay-In-Place Makeup for ages, but I can’t stand my foundation being applied in store, under those harsh fluorescent lights, with the massive pressure to buy straight away. Dreadful. Fast forward to payday, and I was happily dropping cash left, right and center in Red Square when I spotted the Free 7 Day Foundation Trial…be…

Lisa Eldridge’s Foundation Course

Lisa Eldridge

Make-up artist extraordinaire and one of our biggest girl crushes, Lisa Eldridge, recently created a series of videos to help women with the common challenge of selecting the right foundation. The videos cover basic information about choosing and shopping for foundation, advice on picking the right shade for your skin tone, product recommendations and application techniques. Having fallen victim to the curse of the artificial department store lighting and buying the wrong shade of an expensive foundation myself, I can’t tell you how invaluable these videos are. Here is one of the videos but you can click here to see them…

Crisis Management: How To Cover An Enormous Spot

Powders

I woke up on Friday morning with a spot of such epic proportions that I was actually lost for words when I looked in the mirror (usually an expletive of some description springs from my lips in these situations). I took photos of it (for documentation purposes only, obviously), but I’m not ready to unleash them on you…however everyone who was in contact with me over the weekend will vouch that is was/is chronic. As I write this on Sunday night, it shows no signs of abating, so good coverage is my only option. I’m going to take you through…

Flawless Face Series Part II: Foundation

Flawless Face - Foundation

There are four basic formulations to choose from: powder, liquid, crème, and stick foundation (I could have included ‘mousse’ in here but I didn’t, because it’s crap). You need to consider the following when deciding which is best for you: Most importantly, what is your skin type? This is essential – is your skin oily, dry, combination, or sensitive?  You don’t need to pick just one option – I have an oily t-zone, dry cheeks and my skin is incredibly sensitive. What level of coverage do you need? Which texture do you prefer (ie matte, dewy, luminous, velvety)?  You should…

Brand I Wish Was in South Africa: BY TERRY

By Terry Compilation

All hail Terry de Gunzberg! Once the creative director at Yves Saint Laurent, Terry was responsible for the creation of such iconic products as the Touche Éclat and the Teint Singulier. In 2000 she ended her collaboration with YSL to focus on the development of her own make up brand: BY TERRY. The main focus of BY TERRY is radiant skin, so every foundation, tinted moisturiser and concealer will leave you with a fresh and dewy complexion – your skin will quite literally be infused with luminosity. I must confess that I have only ever tried the foundations so I…

REVIEW: Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation

Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation

Here’s the official blurb on this foundation: Mattifying liquid foundation for up to 12 hours. Natural shine control, for fresh matte finish. With camomile to help calm, cucumber to help clarify and cotton to help control shine. Talc free, oil free, paraben free, fragrance free 5 shades to choose from And these were our personal experiences with the product: Jules: Shade: 203 Sand Coverage: Light-medium but I only use a very small amount and then blend it out with a buffing brush. Definitely buildable. Look & Feel: Perfectly smooth application and it feels totally weightless (I HATE being able to feel…
